Activities That Can Cause Back Pain

Activities That Can Cause Back Pain

Lifting heavy objects is a very obvious reason that will cause back pain, but have you considered some of the other daily habits? Are there any other activities that you should be concerned of when it comes to inflicting back pain?

In this article, our Vacaville chiropractor will explain some of the common daily activities that you do that can actually cause back pain. This will make you be aware when doing such activities and consider it as a cause if ever pain starts to build up on your back.

1. Driving - Do you feel soreness on your back after driving for a long distance? If you spend a portion of your day behind the stirring wheel to commute to work, then driving is to blame for your lower back pain. Most of the time, you unconsciously drive in a slouched position. This posture can put some immense soreness on your lower back especially if you're doing it for quite some time.

2. Brushing your teeth and shaving - It may be a bit hard to believe but something as common as brushing your teeth and shaving can actually hurt your lower back. Why? Most people bend over the sink to perform these activities and since it normally takes around 2 to 3 minutes to finish it, problems may arise. If you bend while doing these things, it's most likely to inflict stress on the lower back region.

3. Sleeping - Back pain caused by a poor sleeping position is very common especially for stomach sleepers. Sleeping on your stomach is the number one position that causes back pain because of how it creates a poor posture on your spine. This is made even worse if you're sleeping on a bed with an uneven mattress. Imagine doing this every night and waking up to a sore back each day.

4. Playing with your grandkids or even the dog - You'll find unrivaled joy in life when you get to play with your kids, grandkids, or your furry friend at home. When you're so caught up on doing this, you won't notice that it can actually result to some issues with your body. If you're constantly suffering from back pain when doing this, you might end up missing out on those precious moments.

5. Sitting at your desk - In today's modern society, we are required to sit at our desks for several hours to get the job done. People who are working and sitting in front of their disks have undoubtedly suffered from back pain. This sedentary lifestyle is very common to those who works at the office and their back has suffered the consequences. It may even worsen if you don't stretch or do some exercises at some point during the day.

6. Cleaning and laundry - If you're always cleaning the house and doing some laundry, lifting is part of the task. When doing the laundry, you'll usually have to put clothes in the washer, lift the heavy laundry, and/or put towels on high shelves in which all can put a strain on your lower back. Maintaining cleanliness in your house can also be a problem especially when you have to bend down or go high to reach places that needs cleaning.

7. Reading in bed - There's nothing wrong with reading in bed at all, but the position you are reading while doing it can cause neck and back stiffness. Most of us would normally read in a semi-reclined position with the back propping against the headboard or pillow which is something that can hurt our backs. Others lay on their side which is something that can also stress out the spine and muscles in the lower back. There's nothing wrong with reading before getting a shut eye but it's recommended to sit at an area where you don't put stress on your back at all. This can be difficult to achieve especially if you love and are already used to reading in bed.

After reading this, you might feel guilty about doing the said activities and what it has done to your back. Just be conscious about it next time so that you'll have something to think about when you start feeling some back pain while doing them.
